A new study comparing the effects of two different types of e-liquid has just been published in JAMA. It compared the oral and nasal outward indications of two groups of teenage smokers. One group was presented with a non-nicotine e-liquid, and another was presented with a nicotine e-liquid. The report’s conclusion? E-juices that contain either nicotine or no nicotine are not all bad for your wellbeing.
While it is critical to note that no side effects were noted, the analysis nevertheless brings up some interesting questions. For example, why is there a connection between quitting smoking and e-cigarette use? The authors of the study theorize that because smokers are already very aware of medical effects of smoking, they could unconsciously add e cigarettes to their habit. Nicotine is addictive, after all, and a smoker who quits is suddenly met with an obstacle they hadn’t known they had to overcome.
